Superintendent, Louis Riel School Division
Christian Michalik is the Acting Superintendent of the Louis Riel School Division (LRSD), a Division encompassing 40 schools with over 15,000 students in the south-east quadrant of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Prior to overseeing the inner workings of LRSD, Michalik served as an Assistant Superintendent for the Division (2006–2017), and Director of School & Community Support (2005–2006).
Over the years, Michalik has worked as a teacher in French Immersion schools and has advocated for the French Immersion program and French instruction in English Schools. More recently, he has championed reconciliation and the integration of Indigenous perspectives in schools. He has also overseen Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting requirements, Information Services (IT) and Instructional Supports in LRSD.
Michalik values relationships and collaboration in the context of leadership. He believes that teamwork is the “one thing” that a leader must always promote and support. Shared decision-making, building a collective vision and purpose, and finding common ground with all members of the learning community helps to facilitate positive change. In terms of his educational philosophy, Michalik believes students learn best and teachers improve their practice when all parties are actively engaged in the learning process. He believes parents and the community are partners in education, and students and teachers alike thrive in an environment characterized by security, caring, belonging and respect. He also believes that teachers must learn together, inquire together and solve problems together to realize their potential as educators.
Michalik started his career in September 1989 as a Middle Years Teacher at École Golden Gate School (now Golden Gate Middle School) in the St. James-Assiniboia School Division in western Winnipeg, Manitoba. From 1999 to 2005, Michalik was the Principal of Collège Jeanne-Sauvé. Michalik lives in Winnipeg with his two daughters, Émilie and Camille and their Springer Spaniel, Sammy.
