What will the future of education look like?

Canadian K-12 education is at a crossroads. Our school systems are one of Canada’s most valuable public institutions. For generations, they have created the foundation for a healthy, prosperous, and democratic society. Canada’s school systems are consistently ranked among the top 10 on international comparisons. In EdCan’s role as a connector and convener within the K-12 education sector, we hear countless stories of how educators are creating opportunities for joy and deep learning. You have shared how introducing playful learning experiences, in the classroom or the entire school, gets kids excited about learning. You have shared how small actions – such as pronouncing a name correctly – are powerful signals of belonging.  You have shared how you are coming together to support each other as colleagues, enhancing your collective wellbeing and professional efficacy.

And yet…

There is room for improvement. Alongside the many stories of hope and inspiration, you have shared your frustrations and concerns. As we deepened our understanding of what affects the wellbeing of educators, we heard about an education system that is struggling to adapt to new pressures and increasing uncertainty.

  • A teacher, staying up late to learn a new AI tool as they try to stay one step ahead of their students.
  • A principal, who just had an irate parent storm into the office as they are juggling the schedule to cover a staffing shortage.
  • An education assistant, who would like to stay for the professional development session, but who must leave early to get to their second job.
  • A superintendent, trying to figure out how to accommodate even more students in already overcrowded schools.

It’s not just educators who are feeling the strain. Increasingly, students are finding that the school experience is disconnected from their lives and futures. As the world changes around us, our school systems must adapt and evolve to remain relevant to the needs of young people.

The next few years will define the future of education. The question is, who will define that future? Will it be written by algorithms, political cycles, and crisis management? Or by educators, grounded in evidence and professional wisdom, shaping a future they believe in?
