Fireside chat with Jess Whitley: School Absenteeism
Across the country, educators and system leaders are grappling with the same challenge: how do we address chronic absenteeism?
Dr. Jess Whitley is Canada’s leading researcher on school absenteeism. On October 27th she will be joining us for an interactive fireside chat to help answer this question. Dr. Whitley will begin by sharing a brief overview of the current research, before engaging in a moderated conversation with EdCan Network members.
Dr. Jess Whitley is a Professor of Inclusive Education in the Faculty of Education at the University of Ottawa, where she holds the University Research Chair in Inclusion, Mental Health and School Attendance. Her research focuses on school attendance and absenteeism, school inclusion/exclusion, mental health literacy, inclusive education policy, teacher preparation for inclusive education and the wellbeing of children and youth with mental health issues. She conducts research in partnership with colleagues at universities across Canada as well as collaboratively engaging with community organizations. Jess is co-founder of the Canadian School Attendance Partnership, part of the Canadian Research Centre on Inclusive Education and an associate of Inclusive Education Canada.
