DECOLONIZING PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

What does it mean to decolonize professional learning? And why is it so important that this be done? Awareness is growing of how the systemic racism that grew out of Eurocentric colonialism and is “baked into” our institutional systems, including education, impacts Indigenous, Black and People of Colour (IBPOC) students – but it also impacts education professionals. Systemic racism and colonial attitudes affect not only how and what we teach, but everything from hiring and evaluation to concepts of professionalism – and how we learn and work together.

In the summer of 2022, researchers and educators gathered at Memorial University to discuss the need for, and approaches to, decolonizing professional learning spaces. The articles in this issue came out of this gathering, and Education Canada is proud to partner with Memorial University to help bring this important work to the wider education community in our January 2023 edition.
