Creating the Conditions for Learning and Wellbeing
Across Canada, parents, educators, and system leaders share a common goal: for students to learn and thrive at school. There is a significant, positive correlation between learning and wellbeing. Students learn best when they are well, and academic success strengthens and enhances wellbeing. This reciprocal relationship also applies to educators: supporting student success contributes meaningfully to educator wellbeing.
Recognizing that learning and wellbeing are not separate goals but mutually reinforcing foundations for human flourishing, the 2025–2026 edition of Education Canada explores a central question: How can we create the conditions for learning and wellbeing in our classrooms, schools, and across the education system?
Stories shape us, individually and collectively. They guide us towards possibilities, connect us with ideas and memories, and frame our collective commitments. As Drs Cherkowski, Walker and Kutsyuruba remind us, “shifting the focus from a deficit lens to an appreciative lens opens our view to see the strengths, gifts, and potentials available in our living systems.” Focusing our energy and attention on the aspects of our work that make us feel most alive helps us cultivate more joyful learning experiences and flourishing school communities.
For this reason, we have taken an intentionally appreciative approach in curating articles that will be featured throughout the year. While we acknowledge the complex challenges facing our sector, these contributions are meant to uplift and inspire. As you explore the insights and stories in this issue, we hope you feel encouraged by the creativity, care, and commitment that educators across Canada bring to their work every day. Together, we can build learning environments where students love to learn and where educators are energized to teach.
